Liverpool signing Barcelona’s pacey Spanish winger Cristian Tello
However, a move entirely depends on whether Barcelona’s 14 month transfer ban is overturned, as if it remains in place, the La Liga holders will need to hold onto members of their squad, knowing they’re not allowed to replace them.
The ban was imposed on Barcelona as a result of the club breaking FIFA rules on signing young players.
The Catalan giants have promised to appeal the ban, which if successful, could actually work in a number of other clubs’ favours.
The Reds have been interested in the 22-year-old winger ever since Kenny Dalglish was in charge at Anfield, and are looking to bolster squad options with Champions League football a virtual certainty ahead of next season.
The report rates Tello at around £12m, which seems fair for a player, who although talented, has never been able to cement a regular place in the side.
Since making his debut back in 2011, the Spaniard has racked up 82 appearances and scored a respectable 20 goals.
He prides himself on his dribbling ability, and his pace, so in this respect, would fit into Liverpool’s fluid attacking style seamlessly. Tello can either beat his man on the outside, or cut in and either thread a through-ball to an attacker, or shoot on goal himself.
He can play anywhere along the front line, although is most comfortable starting on the left.
Liverpool already have the excellent trio of Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge occupying the front three spots, but have very little in terms of backup. Tello then would add competition to Brendan Rodgers’ squad, and give the manager the option to rest young Sterling, or the occasionally injured Sturridge, although Suarez will likely remain an ever present.
Any potential deal of course will only take place if Barcelona are allowed to enter the transfer market…
